Richard Rolle, the fourteenth-century English mystic, states, "In ancient days many of the more perfect went out from the monasteries to dwell alone." I myself witnessed the procession of the more advanced of Ramana Maharshi's disciples exiling themselves, one by one, from his ashram during his lifetime.
